Why Engage In Social Bookmarking?

All content boils down to two things:

  • SEO
  • Social Networking

Yes, even website content.

You might have a well-optimized website, but is it making you any money? If not, why not? It could be because your content doesn’t resonate with your readers. That’s a social deficiency. It just isn’t good enough to have a well optimized website. It must also provide your targeted readership a benefit. When it does, it will close some sales for you.

I’m using the word “social” in the broadest sense. All content is social. It is social in the sense that people will read it and either like it or not like it. Maybe you want some people to not like it. Maybe you write your content specifically so that some people won’t like it. That’s a useful social strategy. Here’s the reason why:

People talk. They talk about what they like and they talk about what they don’t like, but they are more likely to talk about what they don’t like. If you get them talking, good or bad, they’ll drive traffic to your website because most people will want to see it for themselves. For instance, if I tell Chris McElroy that I like peanuts and there’s a new website online that makes fun of peanuts and I find it offensive then he’s going to want to know why I’m offended. Me telling him isn’t enough. Chris wants to be offended too.

Why Chris McElroy Likes Peanuts And Why You Should Bookmark It

So Chris will go and visit the peanut website just to see why Allen Taylor is offended. When he gets there he sees an animated gif of two peanuts dancing and one of them disrobes his shell, leaving him naked and “peanutty” before the whole world. He laughs, but is not offended. We can argue and at the end of the day disagree over whether the website content is offensive or not, but guess what – that guy got me to send him traffic and since Chris is a bigger fan of peanuts than I am he decides to buy a 50-pound bag of peanuts.

Well, that’s simplified, but you get the idea. Not everyone likes the same things, but everyone loves to talk. They especially love to talk about things they don’t like. It’s called gossip. And all you have to do to spread a little gossip is bookmark some content you don’t like and that website’s traffic will increase. Are there SEO benefits to social bookmarking? Yes, but the social benefits are better.

If you liked this blog post, bookmark it. If you didn’t, bookmark it. Tell the world I’m the biggest scumbag who ever lived. Go ahead, I dare you. Bookmark it.
