How To Use Your Blog to Get Writing Jobs

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

By Angela Booth

If you enjoy writing, blogging is great fun. You can even turn your love of blogging into a great career. Blogging is a great “work from home” opportunity - you work the hours you please, you work from home, and you’re your own boss.

Blog jobs are springing up everywhere like mushrooms after rain. In this article, you’ll discover five easy tips which will help you to land all the blog jobs you want.

Here are the tips.

1. Focus on your own blog first - build your name and reputation

Your own blog is not only your “portfolio” showing your blogging skills and expertise, it’s also a way to get known. Please don’t just aim to be a generic blogger or writer. In blogging, you need to build your name and reputation. Once people know who you are, you can charge the rates you want.

Don’t forget to let people know you’re available for blog jobs on your blog. Create a “Hire me” page.

2. Use the blog job boards with caution - the best jobs aren’t advertised

Once your blog’s established, check out the blog job boards. However, use them with caution. Check out job posters on Google. If you can’t find anything on them - be very wary.

3. Write guest posts - for free - on other blogs to get known

Writing for free - to get known - is the key to being paid well to blog. Remember, you need to get away from the generic “blogger” tag as soon as possible. Spread your name and writing skills around. You’re laying the foundations of a great career.

4. ASK! Propose a blog to sites which don’t have one

Here’s a big tip. When you see a site which doesn’t have a blog, but which would benefit from one, propose a blog. Your proposal can be just a short note to the site’s contact email address, or it can be a full-blown business proposal.

I suggest a message of a couple of hundred words for your proposals - you’ll be amazed at the results you can get. One blogger is now happily blogging for a large corporation, both publicly, and privately, for the company’s internal blogs. He’s making three times his previous salary.

5. Use the free classifieds sites to spread your name

The benefit of the free classifieds site is that they’re free, and that they spread your name far and wide - remember, the more you get known, the more blog jobs you’ll get, and the more you’ll be paid.

Enjoy blogging: you can turn it into a fantastic career when you know how to get blog jobs.

Writer Jobs Blogger Jobs

Interested in making a living as a writer or a blogger? If you are a writer, are you going to wait until that big writing gig comes along someday before you make any money writing? If you are currently writing a daily blog, are you making any money? Are you going to try and wait until that big blogging deal comes along before you accept work as a blogger?

I ask these questions because I talk to a lot of bloggers and many of them are very proud of their writing skills and they should be. However, many of them are after the pie in the sky. They have seen a few bloggers get bigger jobs. They have seen some blogs really take off and become popular.

But remember, there are millions of blogs out there and most of them want what you want. They want their blog to become extremely popular. They want to make a lot of money blogging. They want someone to come along and hire them for that big writing gig.

It could happen to you. Yes, you should go after your dreams wholeheartedly. But what are you going to do right now while you work on your dream job?

Most movie stars played a lot of bit roles before they became well known or got that big movie deal. Bloggers who want to make it big need to do the same thing. Take any blogging gig that comes along and make some income while you continue to shoot for your dreams.

We hire bloggers. We have blogger job openings. We will not make you rich. But some of our bloggers are making a decent income doing what they enjoy. They are making money online. They are making money from home.

Are you?

Got Pay Per Post? Got 0 PR?

Friday, December 28th, 2007

PPP = PR0

Pay Per Post was a good idea that came about 2 years too late. I tried it for a client and had bloggers write product reviews. it owrked out ok, but not worth the 15% fee Pay Per Post wanted.

Had they started earlier they would have had a chance to make more money before Google basically shut them down. I know pay Per Post is still there, but I don’t see how advertisers are going to want to have posts made on PR0 blogs.

I also don’t see bloggers wanting to risk their page rank just to make a little money from Pay Per Post. So am I predicting the demise of Pay Per Post? Well . . . Yeah.

Google has given bloggers who blog for Pay Per Post a PR 0. The blogs may still rank well in the search engines, but Google effectively killed the idea of having advertisers bid on blog posts based on the PR of the blog.

Will we see yet another lawsuit against Google for doing something with PageRank. Maybe, but it won’t fly. The bottom line is you can complain all you want about google and page rank but they own page rank. They can do with it as they please.

I’m glad I did not use my blogs with Pay Per Post. I was definitely tempted.

What Commercial Blogging Is All About

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I’m often asked by people who want to write blogs for me, “What is entailed in blogging for businesses?” This is a question most often asked by people not familiar with blogging or who have never written a business blog.

We get a lot of applications from people who write a personal blog and they can be quite good at it. But being able to write a personal blog does not mean that a person is capable of blogging for businesses. There is a different mindset altogether.

Personal blogging is more about sharing your own personal feelings and experiences with people you know or, in some cases, with total strangers who might just read one post and never come back or who might like your blog well enough to stick around awhile. Business blogging is about selling, promoting, marketing. It has a purpose and the purpose is to draw customers or other kinds of attention to our clients.

A good business blogger should have the following skills:

  • Ability to write content that sells or promotes
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics
  • It might help to come to the blogging table with some prior knowledge or experience of a subject, but it isn’t entirely necessary if you are good at researching
  • Some knowledge of search engine optimization will also prove beneficial
  • Understand the value of a link and anchor text
  • It also helps to be creative
  • You’ve got to be able to write interesting content that is optimized for search and draws readers in to read more
  • Finally, you must understand that the real goal is to drive traffic to another website where the sale is closed rather than close the sale on the blog itself

Other skills might be helpful, but these are a definite starting place. You’d also do well to come with a good attitude and be able to commit to daily posts. A commitment to grow and blog every day, whether you feel like it or not. If you think you have what it takes to be a ghost, to write for someone else who will get the credit, and to be the creative voice behind the knowledge and experience that a business blog conveys then you might just be right for commercial blogging. If interested, inquire within.
