Keeping Your Blog Up-To-Date

Clients can teach you a lot. The questions they ask or the misconceptions they have when you first meet reveal a lot.

For instance, many ask how often they should be posting to their blog or they are under the impression that it doesn’t matter how often you blog. Some of you reading this may not think it matters, so let’s see why it might.

1. Go to technorati and do a search for the title of the blog post you are writing before you actually write the post. (This experiment works only if you are tagging or pinging technorati with your blog.)

I just did a search on technorati for keeping your blog up-to-date, the title of this blog post. The top result is below;

Spending money: A completely boring blog
This is one of my favorite pasttimes! I only wish it was other people’s money that I was spending. I went to Target today and bought the new Gray’s Soundtrack. Even though I have been keeping … : Isabella Moon: A Novel By Laura Benedict Release date: 25 September, 2007

7 minutes ago in Myspace.com Blogs:54321242 MySpace Blog · Authority: 2

Notice it says it was posted 7 minutes ago. The authority is only a 2, but since it is the most recent post related to those keywords it is on the top of the list.

When I finish this post, I’ll check the results again and report that at the end of the post in an update to this post.

2. Some blog lists or directories only index blogs that are posted to with a certain frequency. In order to be listed, you need to update your blog often.

3. Readers lose interest if you stop offering anything new. They will participate more often and even make a habit of visiting your blog every day if you have something new to offer.

4. Search engines crawl websites and blogs more often if you are updating more often. The old days where a meta tag told the robot how often to re-index your site are long gone. The search spiders return to sites based on their own settings now. Update often, get crawled often. Simple as that.

It’s easy to create a habit if you do it every day. If you start out doing it every other day, it will soon be every third day, then every fourth, then once per week, then when you get around to it and soon you are like thousands of people who started a blog, then gave up on it.

Make it a part of your daily routine and you’ll find you get faster at it and you start to enjoy the benefits of posting every day.

Ok, now for that update I promised. After I posted this post, I waited 10 minutes and the number one search for keeping your blog up-to-date was this post.

That’s not remarkable in that the search is for the exact title of the post. But what it does show is that the results are based on the most recent post for the keywords searched for.

That means the more often you write to your blog, the more often your blog will be found by those searching for the keywords you target.
