Should Your Blog’s URL Have Your Keywords In It?
I was involved in a blog comment discussion that asked, “Should your URL have your keywords in it?” The moderator said No. I say Yes, if possible.
To be clear, keywords in the URL are not a necessity. But I do think they help you rank better. And they also brand you.
One mistake many bloggers make when they set up their blog is to use their personal name. That’s OK if you intend to brand yourself that way, but most people aren’t going to know who you are unless you already have name recognition. If your name if Jim Smith it doesn’t really do a lot for you to have a blog at www.jimsmith.com and you likely will not rank very well because there are undoubtedly thousands of Jim Smith’s out there vying for that name. Trust me. With a name like Allen Taylor I understand the difficulties that come with ranking for my name. Though I am on the first page of Google, so are about three other Allen Taylors.
Nevertheless, if your blog is about tune ups and you know that you’re going to stick to tune ups, as opposed to carburetor flushes and what-not, then look for a domain name with the keyword “tune-up” in it. You should also use the word blog in your domain name if possible because people do search for blogs in specific categories and when people Google “tune up blog” they are more likely to find you that way.
Full Disclosure On Keywords In URLs
I have actually ranked on the first page with domain names without the keyword in the URL, and I’ve done this in a highly competitive field such as search engine optimization. It is difficult to get a first page ranking in these types of fields where cut-throat competition is the order of the day. Still, it’s possible to rank on Page 1 without a domain name using your keyword. However, all other things being the same, if you’re running neck and neck with another domain name that does use your keyword in the URL and it boils down to that one ranking factor then you will lose out. It’s only one ranking factor and not even the most important one, but it is a consideration so don’t discount it.
Bottom line: While it might be a myth that keywords in the domain name are necessary, it is just as much a myth that they are not.

I think it’s a no-brainer. Of course you want your keywords in the url wherever possible. Anyone who thinks you should not put them in the url needs more coffee or something.
For my name (pratish) , my website ranks in first page of Google search. It’s because I have used pratish while commenting on blogs.

though many bloggers just assume that the keywords are of less importance and use their names, they really need to use the keywords, especially for the reason they they work best in branding the blogger and his works.
