What Commercial Blogging Is All About

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I’m often asked by people who want to write blogs for me, “What is entailed in blogging for businesses?” This is a question most often asked by people not familiar with blogging or who have never written a business blog.

We get a lot of applications from people who write a personal blog and they can be quite good at it. But being able to write a personal blog does not mean that a person is capable of blogging for businesses. There is a different mindset altogether.

Personal blogging is more about sharing your own personal feelings and experiences with people you know or, in some cases, with total strangers who might just read one post and never come back or who might like your blog well enough to stick around awhile. Business blogging is about selling, promoting, marketing. It has a purpose and the purpose is to draw customers or other kinds of attention to our clients.

A good business blogger should have the following skills:

  • Ability to write content that sells or promotes
  • Conduct research on a variety of topics
  • It might help to come to the blogging table with some prior knowledge or experience of a subject, but it isn’t entirely necessary if you are good at researching
  • Some knowledge of search engine optimization will also prove beneficial
  • Understand the value of a link and anchor text
  • It also helps to be creative
  • You’ve got to be able to write interesting content that is optimized for search and draws readers in to read more
  • Finally, you must understand that the real goal is to drive traffic to another website where the sale is closed rather than close the sale on the blog itself

Other skills might be helpful, but these are a definite starting place. You’d also do well to come with a good attitude and be able to commit to daily posts. A commitment to grow and blog every day, whether you feel like it or not. If you think you have what it takes to be a ghost, to write for someone else who will get the credit, and to be the creative voice behind the knowledge and experience that a business blog conveys then you might just be right for commercial blogging. If interested, inquire within.
