Blogging Isn’t Easy, But It Is Necessary
Monday, September 10th, 2007Blogging is the new op-ed article. Anyone can do it and ensure that their ideas are published. No editor to reject them. No advertiser to demand that they move out of the way. No profit-oriented controller saying, “Now, now, we’ll not be involved in anything not directly affecting the bottom line.”
OK, maybe you exist in the corporate vacuum where such demands are still the run of the mill. Only a small percentage of corporations have bought into the blogging thing anyway. But what about you?
If you are a small business owner, a blog is nearly essential. A blog contains more SEO benefits than the average web page simply because it gets noticed quicker. If you have the right blogging platform then your blog could get crawled within a couple of days. I’ve seen new blogs get crawled within a couple of hours.
But another curious thing about blogging is you can market your business without making it look like your marketing your business. If you don’t have a blog yet, today could be your day.
The Truth About Blogging
I’m going to be brutally honest. Blogging isn’t easy. I said above that anyone can do it. That is true. But not just anyone can do it well. This is attested to by the number of abandoned blogs out there. Many a small business owner, entrepreneur, or hobbyist has started a blog only to drop it in a few weeks because they’ve run out of things to write about. That may not happen to you, but it could. What then?
You’ll have to ask yourself whether it is wise to write your own blog. Websites with blogs get crawled much faster and rise in PageRank must faster than those without. That makes it such a necessity as a marketing tool that to do without a blog is almost a disaster for any business. But should you - the business owner or manager - be the one to write it. Do you write all your own brochures and marketing collateral?
If you’re like most business owners you believe in letting those who do things well do them and you stick to what you do well. That’s good, sage advice. Perhaps a blog ghostwriter is what you need. At any rate, it doesn’t hurt to just check it out. Does it?
